“La-la-la-la-la-la, sing a happy song. La-la-la-la-la-la, Smurf the whole day long!” A song that generations of fans have come to love and with a little sprinkle of magic dust, South African audiences will soon be transported into the magical world of colourful mushroom houses and little blue people when THE SMURFS LIVE ON STAGE – SMURFS SAVE SPRING takes to the stage from the 13th to the 30th July 2017 at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg.

Your favourite Smurfs characters including Papa Smurf, Clumsy Smurf, Brainy Smurf and the adorable Smurfette will be coming to South Africa – for the first time ever – to transform the Wintery breeze into a colourful Spring (the Smurfs’ favourite time of the year).

The Smurfs are busy preparing for the much-anticipated annual Spring Parade but if Gargamel has his way, there won’t be a parade at all!  While the Smurfs are singing and dancing with excitement, the wicked Gargamel comes up with a plan to trick Mother Nature and bring an end to the festivities.

THE SMURFS LIVE ON STAGE is a magical adventure that will see the Smurfs battle Gargamel and save Mother Nature, showing the power of family and true team spirit.  Fans alike can get ready to cheer the Smurfs as they come to life on the grand stage with life-size mushroom-shaped forest houses, vibrant backdrops and wonderful sing-along music.

Created in 1958 by Pierre Culliford (fondly known as Peyo), the Smurfs have come to be one of the most loved cartoon characters around the world, especially after the launch of the animated cartoon series in 1980.  Spanning over three decades, the series was produced by Hanna Barbera and with 272 episodes (dubbed into 40 languages) under its belt, it has enjoyed top ratings in more than 100 countries.  Millions of Smurfs DVDs continue to be sold worldwide and recently a new milestone was achieved with the creation and release of the Smurfs 3D movies – the first in 2011, second in 2013 and most recently, the release of the 3D animated adventure-comedy, The Lost Village.

Which Smurf will be chosen as the leader of this year’s parade?  Will the Smurfs be able to save themselves?  Will they save Mother Nature?  Will they stop Gargamel from turning off Spring forever?

A ‘Smurftastic’ time awaits – don’t miss THE SMURFS LIVE ON STAGE – SMURFS SAVE SPRING in their 90-minute show at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg for a limited season from the 13th to the 30th July, 2017.

LOCAL FILM CLINCHES 8TH AWARD AT NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL

Local film, KROTOA, will only be released in South Africa in August, yet it has already managed to conquer the hearts of international film lovers and critics.  The film added to its growing list of accolades this past weekend by claiming its 8th award for the coveted title of Best Film at the Harlem International Film Festival held in New York.

KROTOA is just as remarkable and unforgettable as the historical heroin that this impressive film is based on.  It is a striking tale about a woman who was prepared to sacrifice everything to give birth to the great nation we all share today.  It not only has a powerful message, which anyone can relate to, but also promises to take moviegoers on an epic adventure back in time.

The film has also already received six official selections at international film festivals around the globe including the International Film Festival for Environment, Health and Culture, World Film Awards, Artemis Women in Action Film Festival and the Nashville Film Festival.

It is inspired by the historical fact that tells the story of a feisty, bright, young eleven-year old girl, who is removed from her close-knit Khoi tribe to serve Jan van Riebeeck (Armand Aucamp – ), her uncle’s trading partner. She is brought into the first Fort, established by the Dutch East India Company in 1652. There she grows into a visionary young woman, who assimilates the Dutch language and culture so well that she rises to become an influential interpreter for van Riebeeck, who became the first Governor of the Cape Colony. Krotoa (Crystal Donna Roberts – ) ends up being rejected by her own Khoi people and destroyed by the Dutch, when she tries to find the middle way between the two cultures.

The film, written by Kaye Ann Williams and Margaret Goldsmid, was created by a dynamic team of women, with acclaimed filmmaker Roberta Durrant as director and producer.  Roberta is the creator of various award-winning South African television series, including Ring of Lies, Home Affairs (nominated for two International Emmy Awards and as Best Drama at the Banff Film Festival), Montana, Izingane Zobaba, Sokhulu and Partners (nominated for an International Emmy Award and as Best Drama at the Africa Magic Awards), Shreds and Dreams, Saints and Sinners, Zbondiwe, Isikizi and Forced Love; as well as sitcoms like Sgudi Snaysi, Going Up, Madam and  Eve (won a Rose Award for Best comedy  at the Golden Rose Awards in Lucerne), SOS, Fishy Feshuns, Going Up Again, Mazinyo dot Q, and Stokvel. She is also responsible for the children’s film, Felix, which won seventeen international film awards, while other productions like Inside Out, Skilpoppe and Ingoma were also very well received. Ingoma won six SAFTA Awards in 2016.   She is also the producer of the new kykNET drama, Sara se Geheim.

“In comparison to men, very few women have been acknowledged for having an impact on South African history. During the struggle, women like Ruth First, Lillian Ngoyi, Bettie du Toit and Sophia Williams-du Bruyn stood their ground in the fight against the apartheid government. However, if we dig into South Africa’s rich history, we discover that there were other indigenous females – who contributed to the change and development of our great nation – even before the sisters who were involved in the struggle,” says Durrant.

“KROTOA (or Eva – a name given to her by the Dutch) is the tragic heroin of this movie. It is not only important to tell her story because of all her great achievements, but it is also necessary to highlight that she was caught between two ways of life and constantly forced to choose between these two cultures. Identity, a sense of belonging and reconciliation are strong, universal themes in this powerful tale. Especially because the identity of someone, who is in between two cultures, is very relevant in any multicultural society,” she adds.

Jacques Bessenger, Doen Lotz, Marcel van Heerden, Roeline Daneel, Brendon Daniels and Ernest St Clair also star in this critically acclaimed film.

KROTOA was produced by the SAFTA award-winning film company, Penguin Films, in association with kykNET, the NFVF and the DTI.  The film will be released on the 4th of August 2017 (Women’s Month) and is the perfect way to celebrate the lasting impression women have had on the South African nation.  The film is distributed by Ster-Kinekor Entertainment.

The other awards include:

  • Award of Excellence at the International Film Festival for Women, Social Issues and Zero Discrimination
  • Best of Show at the Depth of Field International Film Festival
  • Platinum Award at the International Movie Awards
  • Diamond Award at the Filmmakers World Festival
  • Best of Show at the IndieFEST Film Awards
  • Award of Excellence Special Mention: Women Filmmakers at the Accolade Global Film Competition
  • World Platinum Award at the World Woman Awards

Rock in my Taal vind plaas by Carnival City se Big Top Arena op Saterdag, 20 Mei om 20:00. Besprekings kan by Computicket gemaak word by 0861 915 8000 of http://www.computicket.com. Groepe van meer as 10 kry ’n stewige afslag; kontak asseblief Lefra Produksies by 011 815 3000, of stuur ’n e-pos na admin@lefra.com.

The Sweet Resistance is ’n alternatiewe pop-rock-groep van Kaapstad.

Take Your Time pas vrygestel.

ZENGEANCE bring back rock’n’roll with a vengeance with the release of their new album:

A Suburban Manifesto

ZENGEANCE from left: Lafras Uys, Erick Zulch & Wian Brand – Photo by: Jessica Botha

The trio of rock’n’roll matriculants from the northern suburbs,  ZENGEANCE is back this year and they have come armed with a new album, ‘A Suburban Manifesto’  which has been produced by local music maestro, Albert Frost. April saw the successful launch performance of their new album at Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville and marked the start of a brand new chapter in their young music career.

Inspired by anything from cool jazz to death metal, ZENGEANCE have skillfully created their own blend of blues-, funk-, psychedelic-, indie-, pop-, garage- and punk rock; each of these styles beautifully captured in each song on their full length album. Listening through the album is somewhat like paging through a rock encyclopedia – a brilliantly entertaining experience.

‘A Suburban Manifesto’  is now available to stream and download from iTunes here:

https://itun.es/za/eBU6ib

The band was created in 2014 when vocalist/guitarist Erick Zulch convinced his friends Wian Brand (bass) and Lafras Uys (drums) to form a band with him. The fact that neither of them owned instruments did not seem like an obstacle. The plan was to use the band as a means to appear cool at school and get girlfriends. Since then, the band of rock brothers realised they have something a lot more meaningful to achieve together through their music and even though the plan to get girlfriends sort of didn’t really work out (except for Erick getting lucky), they are now out on a mission to show the world that the sound and soul of pure rock and rhythms can come from anywhere. Their initial expectations have far been surpassed and they have shown their faithful local following (which just keeps expanding with every  explosive performance they deliver) that they mean business and are here to stay. ZENGEANCE is proof that amazing sound is contained in any shape, size and age package. “ I love their mission to bring back that raw rock sound which has been absent in SA discourse for some time. I also really love their sound which sounds exactly what you’d expect of some kids with the spunk of Blink but the love for the Black Keys.“ – Richard Anthony Chemaly from MILLE.

‘A Suburban Manifesto’ produced by Albert Frost, pictured here with the members of ZENGEANCE at VH Music where they recorded their album with Gerhard Grobler.

“Working with Zengeance was an absolute treat. These guys love playing music together and it comes through on this album, three 17 year olds rocking it hard with a great energy and focus. Proof that rock and roll is truly still alive!” – Albert Frost

A true love for music can quickly be identified within people, and their latest offering is a manifesto of all the things they themselves love about music – to be enjoyed by anyone regardless of creed, age or race. These three gangly high school nerds rely on their tightness and coordination to produce a sound they know will absorb the crowd and get them as lost in the music as they are.

Don’t miss the chance to catch these young gentlemen live. Details on future gigs are available from their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/Zengeance-644653928999213/
